Celebrities in VW Campers
It won’t be a surprise that the VW camper has a celebrity following – the van itself is regarded as a genuine star these days. Here we look at some of the big names who share the love for one of the world’s most fashionable, fun and recognised vehicles.
Let’s begin with someone simultaneously obvious and surprising…
Richard Hammond
With Top Gear’s penchant for destroying and turning caravans into something of a pin cushion for several series’ it’s almost a shock to the system to see Richard Hammond owning a Danbury camper. It’s metallic pink too!
At the same time, though, if there’s going to be one man who can appreciate a legendary vehicle – it’s going to be somebody from the UK’s most famous motoring show.
Jamie Oliver
Jamie Oliver has quickly become just as synonymous with the Kombi lifestyle as he has with cooking. Perhaps this boils down to his televised cooking tour around rural Italy several years ago, all carried out in a souped up VW camper.
Some might argue that, due to the huge engine he’s managed to squeeze into the back, it isn’t technically an authentic camper van, but we disagree.
Ian Cumming
You’d be forgiven for perhaps not recognising this name straight away. Ian Cumming was a finalist in 2015’s Great British Bake Off competition, and has since been noted as a T2 lover, to boot.
There’s definitely something going on with kitchens and Kombis …
Jenson Button
Again, another combination of ‘Of course!’ and ‘What!?’; a Formula One racing driver scooting around in a classic T2 camper? Well, as it happens, Button is well known for his absolute love of the various Kombi models (rumours say that he owns 2 T2s – a 1956 and a 1966 ).
In fact, back in 2010 he teamed up with Lewis Hamilton to drive around in the 1966 camper, handing out passes for the British Grand Prix. Could we see a classic VW race sometime in the future?
One Direction
An entry for the younger generation, here; whatever your view of the band’s music, it’s encouraging to see that the love for Brazilian campers isn’t relegated to just the older drivers among us.
The pop band was spotted, several years back, scooting around Wales in a beautiful T2 Kombi. Hopefully it’ll encourage a whole new wave of younger VW camper enthusiasts!
Some Honorary Mentions
Some other celebrities which have been rumoured to sport a penchant for the beloved VW camper are:
• Ewan McGregor – Showing film stars have down-to-earth tastes, too.
• Robbie Williams – The VW motor home love seems to be all throughout pop music.
• The Who – Various members owned and drove different models of campers throughout the years and who could forget the infamous Magic Bus?
• Jim Carrey – When the famous actor was younger, his entire family had to live out of a VW camper van, really putting the ‘home’ in motor home.
